The Great Theatre

The historic building of the Great Theatre belongs to the most important historic cultural landmarks of the town. It was opened with the festive performance of Bedrich Smetana’s Libuše on 27th September 1902. Its architect was Antonín Balšánek and there were other artists who contributed to the rich decorations of this building. The main face of the building is dominated by sculptures on buttresses called Opera and Drama by Ladislav Šaloun, other sculptures were made by Stanislav Sucharda, Vilém Amort or Antonín Procházka. The paintings in the foyer were created by Josef Mandl, the author of the ceiling painting is František Urban. A special attention should be given to the monumentally painted curtain, as per the requested theme “Pilsen welcomes art on the threshold of its new theatre” by Augustin Němejc.

Another cultural landmark is the building of the original Municipal Theatre archival store, built in 1924 according to the design of architect Hanuš Zápala. Today it is used as workshops, housing a room for painting decorations, carpenter’s, locksmith’s, upholsterer’ and hatter’s workshops, male and female tailor rooms and a costumes and decorations store.
