SWAN LAKE

Peter Iljitsch Tschaikowsky

Choreography and production Jiří Němeček Jr

Swan Lake ranks among the fundamental works of the huge personality of the neoromantic period of Russian music, Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, a pupil of the conservatoire in St. Petersburg and a teacher of musical theory in the Moscow conservatoire, author of a number of symphonies, suites, several orchestral fantasies, ten operas and three ballets. The premiere of this opera was in Moscow on 20th April 1877 in the choreography of the future ballet master of the National Theatre in Prague Václav Reisinger and with the libretto of V. P. Begichev and F. V. Gelcer.

In Plzeň Swan Lake was staged for the first time in 1940 by Josef Jugl, for the second time on 25th June 1955 in the choreography and production of head of ballet Jiří Němeček who successfully worked in the Plzeň theatre for six seasons. His son, J. Němeček Jr, adopted with pleasure our offer for a new production of this charming fabulous story which is today the most frequently played classic ballet staged on all world ballet stages.
