CARMEN

George Bizet

Oper in drei Akten

Conductor Jiří Štrunc
Director Jan Burian

Bizet´s Carmen ranks among the greatest repertorial fixed stars of opera theatres. The libretto was written by the experienced pair H. Meilhac and L. Halévy according to Prosper Mérimée who is said to have processed the real story for his novelette. Bizet died three months after the unsuccessful premiere of Carmen and did not live to see its later success. This opera affected its contemporaries in a completely new way as it realistically processes the story of the unhappy love of Don José for the gipsy girl Carmen who fell in love with the toreador Escamillo and thus gave rise to José´s jealousy leading to suicide. The producer of the Plzeň Carmen is the present director of the J. K. Tyl Theatre, Jan Burian. This time, after his preceding non-conforming staging of Dvořák´s Rusalka, he chose an immediate and more realistic expression. The spactator has a possibility to let himself captivate by the atmosphere of the heat-emitting summer Sevilla which creates a background to a story full of passions. The leading role of the gipsy girl Carmen is performed with artistic mastery and singer´s bravura by the leading soloist of the Plzeň opera, mezzo-soprano Jana Tetourová.

We stage the opera in the French original with Czech captions.
